A herniated disc is a condition in which the outer portion of the vertebral disc is torn and the inner portion of the disc herniates or extrudes through the fibers. The herniated material can compress the nerves around the disc. In the cervical region this can create pain that can radiate from the neck down the arms and in the lumbar region this can cause pain in the back that radiates down the legs. Herniated discs are often successfully treated with epidural steroid injections.
